Resolution expected calling for May 8 city election

There will be three seats up for grabs when Mexia voters go the polls May 8.
On the ballot will be the District 2 seat of Laura Rothrock, the District 5 seat of current Mayor Pro-Tem Arthur Busby and the District 6 seat currently occupied by Bobby Jack Liles. Balloting is expected to take place this spring at the Mexia Civic Center.
But the election won't happen unless the council approves a resolution calling for the May 8 balloting during its regular session. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) in the Municipal Court Room on North Sherman Street.
Also on the agenda for tonight's meeting is an election-related issue. The city's governing body is expected to discuss a lease agreement with Limestone County for electronic voting machines for the upcoming election. The city has entered in to such an agreement several times during recent election years to ensure ballots can be tabulated electronically.
City Manager Larry Brown is also expected to have a recommendation concerning the updated assessment of the physical condition of City Hall. The update will be compared, for discussion, with the 2007 report.
A couple of purchases are also in the works for voting tonight. Expected before the council are requests to buy a tire cutter for the Public Works Department, and for the purchase of a 2-1/2 ton truck to be used for picking up brush by the Mexia Fire Department.
