GROESBECK - Things are not as bad as they appear on paper.
That's the tact taken by city officials after the latest list of sales tax rebates from the Texas Comptroller Susan Combs' office.
"I received our sales tax allocation numbers and will explain why our percentage shows it to be down by 67.41 percent," City Administrator Martha Stanton said. "In January of 2009, we received $116,545.17 in collections.
"An audit by the Comptroller's office revealed that we had been overpaid by $75,654.90," she said. "When this month's allocation is compared to the overage allocation of last year, it shows to be 67.41 percent. The actual percentage with January of this year's audited figures is a minus 14.8 percent.
The state provided the city with a worksheet, reconciling the city's actual January 2009 allocation with an adjusted allocation after removing the $75,654.90 over the allocated amount. The adjusted sheet was mailed to the City of Groesbeck from Tom Malone, Supervisor of the Tax Allocation Section from the Comptroller's office
