Ladycat Volleyball has Two Named to All-State Team
 (Posted 1/19/2010 12:21 pm)
The volleyball season ended way back in November of 2009, but some All-State and other awards have only recently been announced. The Texas Sports Writers Association recently published their Collins Street Bakery 2009 All-State Volleyball team in the 3A classification.

Two Mexia seniors earned recognition on these teams. Mexia senior Kendle Brizendine was named First Team All-State as an outside hitter/middle blocker.

Kendle is one of only 7 players from the State of Texas in the 3A classification named to the first team. Kendle is also one of only two players recognized on the All-State first team, who did not play in the State Tournament this year, as Mexia was defeated in the region final - one victory short of the State Tournament. Fredericksburg also missed the state tournament and placed their libero, Lauren Pyka, on the first team. The other five girls from Lucas Lovejoy (Andie Malloy, Lauren McDaniel, Tyler Bradsher), Wimberley (Laura Blab) and Caldwell (Melissa Cumby) all participated in the state tournament.

Additionally, Mexia senior Cori Speights was named Third Team All-State, also as an outside hitter/middle blocker.

Also, the Texas Girls Coaches Association has recently listed its Academic All-State team in the 3A classification and again, Cori Speights and Kendle Brizendine were recognized in this list.

In December 2009, Cori and Kendle were also named to the Waco Tribune Super Centex teams. This is a special team selected from all Central Texas volleyball teams - in all school classifications - as the best in Central Texas and is administered and published by the Waco Tribune. Cori was one of ten girls selected from the Central Texas area for First Team Super Centex honors. And, Kendle was selected to the Super Centex second team. Mexia junior Courtney Condon received honorable mention.
