Mexia's State Championship football team will have a reunion this Homecoming weekend, with visits, swapping of stories about the 1989 season, and other activities planned at the Holiday Inn Express on West Highway 84. It's scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Norman Cobb and wife Elaine will attend the reunion, and will be joined for sure by several other coaches including Ken Barnett, Jack Estes and Clarence Bennett. A good turnout of players on the team which defeated Vernon for the title, is also due to attend.
Sonny Adams arranged for the site where the team and coaches, and other friends will re-unite. Media persons who followed and reported and broadcast throughout that season, have indicated they are looking forward to attending a portion of the get-together, scheduled from 1 until 6 o'clock.
The game which brought back the championship to Mexia was over the Lions 22-21. As previously stated, that game has since been noted as one of the classics in Texas High School Football history.
Weather conditions won't be forgotten, either. The game was played throughout in sub-freezing temperatures at HEB Stadium in Bedford. Starting out, the thermometer registered about 12 degrees. By the afternoon game's end, the temperature had gone to a "warm" 22 degrees.
